Definition Essay – Expository Writing

Many people believe that being a good friend is an important quality.
Think about what it means to be a friend. Brainstorm some ideas about
what a good friend means to you, then write a four to five paragraph
definition essay explaining what a good friendship means to you.

Introduction – Your definition of friendship. Try to begin your essay
with a catchy opening, briefly introduce what your paper will be about.
You will focus on three separate qualities that make up a good friend.

2nd paragraph – Describe the first quality that makes up a good friend.
You can provide specific examples from your own life. My most important
quality in a good friend would be a good listener, who is always willing
to give me advice and help me out whenever I am in need. Think about what
matters most when you are choosing your friends.

3rd paragraph – Describe the second quality that makes up a good friend.
My second quality in any of my friends would be that they make me laugh
and can cheer me up if I am feeling down. Once again, elaborate when you
are writing. I would give you a specific example of when I was down, and
‘how’ my friends helped me feel better by making me laugh.

4th paragraph or conclusion – Describe the third quality of a good friend.
My third quality would be any friend of mine has to have similar values
and beliefs as me, and enjoy the same pastimes as me, such as physical
activities such as running or volleyball, and similar music tastes, etc.
If you don’t write about a third quality, summarize what you have written
so far. Your conclusion is similar to your introduction, just restate
what you have already written and try to close or finish your paper with a
strong statement such as : I don’t know how I would go on if it weren’t
for my friends. My best friends listen to me when I am in need, make me
laugh when I’m sad, and allow me to enjoy all of my favorite pastimes!
