It should be remembered that the above classification does not pretend to be exact. Very often description, narration, and reflection may be combined in the same composition; the line that divides the descriptive essay from the expository, and the expository from the reflective, is sometimes harrow and difficult to define, while, as we shall see later, it is possible for the same subject to be placed in any one of the four classes according to the point of view from which it is regarded.

(Note: We emphasized organization in the last essay. You need to focus on those items as well as the items in bold, the ones that we emphasized in class and that I will be focusing on in your final draft. The other items are all part of good revising which we will be covering in future weeks. You should try to accomplish as many of them as possible, especially if you feel you are very well practiced in the 5 paragraph essay already).
ORGANIZATION
- My introduction will make my reader want to keep reading my essay.
- My introduction clearly states my main idea or the main feeling I want to leave with my reader.
- My essay has 1-3 body paragraphs, and the chronological (time) order of events is clear to my reader.
- I have chosen specific part of my experience to emphasize and not given every moment equal emphasis.
- Each body paragraph starts out with a topic sentence that lets my reader know what the paragraph will be about.
- Each topic sentence is followed by 3-5 sentences which help “put the reader there,” sharing my experience with specific sensory details—sight, sound, touch, taste, smell.
- My concluding paragraph effectively expresses my feelings as I think back on this experience.
- My concluding paragraph answers the question “So what?”; i.e. it lets the reader know why I care about the experience I have chosen to write about.
- I checked to see if I need to ADD any information to make my thoughts clearer or more complete.
- I checked to see if I needed to CUT any information where I might have repeated myself or brought in ideas that don’t belong.
- I checked to see if I needed to REARRANGE any parts, if any words, phrases, or sentences, or paragraphs were in the wrong place and made things confusing for the reader.
- I checked to see if I need to REWRITE any parts.
- I found at least one more place to add a sensory (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) detail.
- I found at least one place I could add a quotation from someone for added interest. (A personal narrative lends itself easily to conversation and quotation).
- I found at least one place I could substitute a more specific verb for a more general one (e.g. Jim raced to the mailbox rather than Jim went to the mailbox.)
- I found at least one place I could substitute a more specific description for a more general one (e.g. We played dodge ball and badminton and ate Krispy Kreme doughnuts at the party instead of We played games and ate dessert at the party.)

Write a personal narrative for a college or job application.
At first, you may think, “My life is so boring. What do I write about?” The truth is that you don’t have to lead an exciting life to write an interesting narrative. A good story depends more on the telling than on the content. In this narrative, explain how an experience helped shape your views.
PREWRITING
An application essay gives you the opportunity to distinguish yourself from everyone else. Take advantage of the opportunity by writing about an experience that helped make you who you are—one that helped shape your goals, your values, or your view of yourself and the people around you. For example, you may write about:
- An experience that shows your personal growth
- An incident in which you defended something you believe in
- An incident in which you made a significant choice or decision
- An experience that helped you better understand and appreciate your heritage
- An experience in which you overcame an obstacle or problem
To help you brainstorm for a good topic:
- Make a list of things, people, or behaviors that give you excitement, fulfillment, or peace
- List four aspects of your life that you value highly
- List four things that you like about yourself
- List four areas in which you think you could improve
Consider your purpose:
- How will this narrative strengthen my application?
- How can I show a part of me not represented in my application
- How can I make my application stand out from the rest?
Make a plan:

Student Model
Last spring, when my mother announced that we were going to spend our family vacation visiting cousins in Mexico, I let out a big groan. I had a lot of great ideas for the family vacation, and going to a hot, dusty place to visit people I’d never met surely wasn’t one of them. I tried every argument I could think of to change my mother’s mind about the trip. I said it would be too hot for my baby sister, the trip would cost too much, I’d have trouble getting time off from my part-time job, we’d be imposing on our relatives, and on and on and on. I might as well have saved my breath. My mother’s mind was made up. Today, I’m truly glad it was. Much to my surprise, the trip to Mexico was one of the best and most important experiences of my life.
*** As you can tell, you are allowed to use “you’s” and contractions. If you don’t bother to read this example…oh, well.
PROOFREADING CHECKLIST
ü Have I avoided run-on sentences and sentence fragments?

ü Have I formed plural and possessive nouns correctly?
ü Do verbs agree with their subjects? Are verb tenses correct? Does verb tense shift correctly to show sequence of events?

ü Have I avoided or corrected dangling participles and misplaced modifiers?

You’ve received your assignment, and now you’re ready to decide on a topic. You may not have a choice about the type of essay you’ll write, since this may have been determined by the assignment. If you do have a choice, however, you can find a type that will best fit your personality.
Do you like to argue? If so, it can come in handy for this assignment! You might want to choose to write a persuasive argument.
Perhaps you are gifted with great descriptive capabilities, instead. Do you enjoy using colorful language to describe or explain things? You could write a narrative of something interesting that took place, or perhaps you could try writing a descriptive essay of an object.
Whatever you decide to do, you’ll find your assignment much more enjoyable (and readable) if you suit your topic to your own personality type.
Common essay types include the following:
Persuasive/argumentative essay. Makes a claim or takes a position and backs it up with statistics, expert opinions, and other evidence. You may review an opposing review and explain why it is wrong and you are right.
Comparison essay. Demonstrates similarities and differences between two topics.
Descriptive essay. Explains the “what, why, how, when, and where’s” of a topic. For example, a descriptive essay about a tree would explain what it’s made of, why it grows, when it grows, and so on.
Evaluation essay. Describes a thing or event and explains its importance, value, and/or relevance. Did you like this thing? Why?
Narrative essay. Tells a story in a sequence of events. There should be some point, lesson, or idea gleaned from this narrative to make the essay meaningful.

As a mode of expository writing, the narrative approach, more than any other, offers writers a chance to think and write about themselves. We all have experiences lodged in our memories, which are worthy of sharing with readers. Yet sometimes they are so fused with other memories that a lot of the time spent in writing narrative is in the prewriting stage.
When you write a narrative essay, you are telling a story. Narrative essays are told from a defined point of view, often the author’s, so there is feeling as well as specific and often sensory details provided to get the reader involved in the elements and sequence of the story. The verbs are vivid and precise. The narrative essay makes a point and that point is often defined in the opening sentence, but can also be found as the last sentence in the opening paragraph.
Since a narrative relies on personal experiences, it often is in the form of a story. When the writer uses this technique, he or she must be sure to include all the conventions of storytelling: plot, character, setting, climax, and ending. It is usually filled with details that are carefully selected to explain, support, or embellish the story. All of the details relate to the main point the writer is attempting to make.
To summarize, the narrative essay
- is told from a particular point of view
- makes and supports a point
- is filled with precise detail
- uses vivid verbs and modifiers
- uses conflict and sequence as does any story
- may use dialogue
The purpose of a narrative report is to describe something. Many students write narrative reports thinking that these are college essays or papers. While the information in these reports is basic to other forms of writing, narrative reports lack the “higher order thinking” that essays require. Thus narrative reports do not, as a rule, yield high grades for many college courses. A basic example of a narrative report is a “book report” that outlines a book; it includes the characters, their actions, possibly the plot, and, perhaps, some scenes. That is, it is a description of “what happens in the book.” But this leaves out an awful lot.
What is left out is what the book or article is about — the underlying concepts, assumptions, arguments, or point of view that the book or article expresses. A narrative report leaves aside a discussion that puts the events of the text into the context of what the text is about. Is the text about love? Life in the fast lane? Society? Wealth and power? Poverty? In other words, narrative reports often overlook the authors purpose or point of view expressed through the book or article.
Once an incident is chosen, the writer should keep three principles in mind.
- Remember to involve readers in the story. It is much more interesting to actually recreate an incident for readers than to simply tell about it.
- Find a generalization, which the story supports. This is the only way the writer’s personal experience will take on meaning for readers. This generalization does not have to encompass humanity as a whole; it can concern the writer, men, women, or children of various ages and backgrounds.
- Remember that although the main component of a narrative is the story, details must be carefully selected to support, explain, and enhance the story.
Conventions of Narrative Essays
In writing your narrative essay, keep the following conventions in mind.
- Narratives are generally written in the first person, that is, using I. However, third person (he, she, or it) can also be used.
- Narratives rely on concrete, sensory details to convey their point. These details should create a unified, forceful effect, a dominant impression. More information on the use of specific details is available on another page.
- Narratives, as stories, should include these story conventions: a plot, including setting and characters; a climax; and an ending.
