Long-term preparation

• Read the course syllabus, and make note of any themes or connections you notice.  Check with your instructor to see if he/she agrees, and then as the class proceeds, pay attention to how the ideas presented relate to these themes.

• Learn as much as possible from your instructor and other sources about the form and content of upcoming tests, including grading criteria.  For example, how much does your instructor emphasize grammatical correctness and writing?

Short-term preparation

• A week or two before a test, review your notes and reading assignments and generate a list of main ideas or themes that your instructor covered in class.  Pay attention to the relationships between these themes; they may be clues to possible essay questions.

• For each major topic, create a summary sheet of relevant data, and then review actively by integrating notes, text, and supplementary information such as diagrams or paragraph summaries in your own words.  Show your review sheets to your instructor to make sure you’re on the right track.

• Use these relationship charts and summary sheets to generate a list of possible questions. Outline answers to as many of these questions as time permits.

• Compare and contrast questions are typical on essay tests.  An effective way to prepare for this sort of question is to create a chart, as follows:

TAKING ESSAY TESTS

Before you write

1.  Budget your time according to the point value of each question.  Be sure to allow time for reviewing and proofreading your work at the end of the exam period.

2.  Read all essay questions before you start to write, paying attention to key words such as compare, explain, justify, and define.  Make sure you understand the question, and if you’re not sure, ask your instructor for clarification.

3.  Begin with the question that seems easiest.

4.  Before writing, make a rough outline of your answer.  Quickly list the ideas and facts you want to include, and number the points in the order you want to present them.  Be sure to distinguish main topics from supporting examples.

While you write

1.  State a definite, clear thesis within the first few sentences of your answer.

2.  Leave space for additions to your answer by writing on every other line and on only one side of each page.

3.  Follow your outline, and be specific with examples and details.

4.  When you reach the end of the time for a given question, move on to the next one.  Partially answering all questions is better than fully answering some and not answering others at all.  Remember: the instructor can’t give you partial credit for questions you haven’t attempted.

5.  If you find yourself out of time on a question, quickly write an outline of the rest of your answer.  The grader might be able to give you partial credit for it.

6.  If you don’t know much about a question, relax and brainstorm for a few moments.  Recall your readings, lectures, and discussions.  This might trigger memories relevant to the question.

7.  If your mind goes blank, don’t panic.  Take some deep breaths, and for a moment think about something pleasant that’s not related to the test.  Then, if you’re still blank, move on to a different question.

After you write

1.  Read through your answers and make any necessary additions.

2.  Proofread for errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Before writing out the exam:

Set up a time schedule
to answer each question and to review/edit all questions

• If six questions are to be answered in sixty minutes, allow yourself only seven minutes for each
• If questions are “weighted”, prioritize that into your time allocation for each question
• When the time is up for one question, stop writing, leave space, and begin the next question. The incomplete answers can be completed during the review time
• Six incomplete answers will usually receive more credit than three, complete ones

Read through the questions once and note if you have any choice in answering questions

• Pay attention to how the question is phrased, or to the “directives”, or words such as “compare”, “contrast”, “criticize”, etc.  See their definitions in “Essay terms“
• Answers will come to mind immediately for some questionsWrite down their key words, listings, etc, as they are fresh in mind. Otherwise these ideas may be blocked (or be unavailable) when the time comes to write the later questions. This will reduce “clutching” or panic (anxiety, actually fear which disrupts thoughts).

Before attempting to answer a question, put it in your own words

• Now compare your version with the original.
  Do they mean the same thing? If they don’t, you’ve misread the question. You’ll be surprised how often they don’t agree.

Think before you write:
Make a brief outline for each question
Number the items in the order you will discuss them

• Get right to the point
  State your main point in the first sentence
  Use your first paragraph to provide an overview of your essay.
  Use the rest of your essay to discuss these points in more detail.
  Back up your points with specific information, examples, or quotations from your readings and notes

• Teachers are influenced by compactness, completeness and clarity of an organized answer
• Writing in the hope that the right answer will somehow turn up is time-consuming and usually futile
• To know a little and to present that little well is, by and large, superior to knowing much and presenting it poorly–when judged by the grade received.

Writing & answering:

Begin with a strong first sentence
that states the main idea of your essay.
Continue this first paragraph by presenting key points

Develop your argument

• Begin each paragraph
  with a key point from the introduction
• Develop each point
  in a complete paragraph
• Use transitions,
  or enumerate, to connect your points
• Hold to your time
  allocation and organization
• Avoid very definite statements
  when possible; a qualified statement connotes a philosophic attitude, the mark of an educated person
• Qualify answers when in doubt.
  It is better to say “toward the end of the 19th century” than to say “in 1894″ when you can’t remember, whether it’s 1884 or 1894. In many cases, the approximate time is all that is wanted; unfortunately 1894, though approximate, may be incorrect, and will usually be marked accordingly.

Summarize in your last paragraph
Restate your central idea and indicate why it is important.

Review:

Complete questions left incomplete,
but allow time to review all questions

Review, edit, correct
misspellings, incomplete words and sentences, miswritten dates and numbers.

Essay test answers reveal more than the bare facts, though. When submitting essay answers, students are expected to cover lots of information in an organized, sensible manner.

But what if you prepare for an essay question and the teacher doesn’t ask one?

Review chapter titles. Textbook chapters often refer to themes. Look at each relevant title and think of smaller ideas, chains of events, and relevant terms that fit within that theme.

As you take notes, look for teacher code words. If you hear your teacher use words like “once again we see” or “another similar event occurred,” make note of it. Anything that indicates a pattern or chain of events is key.

Think of a theme every day. Every few nights as you review your class notes, look for themes. Come up with your own essay questions based on your themes.

Practice your essay questions. As you do, make sure you use vocabulary terms found in your notes and text. Underline them as you go, and go back to review their relevance.

If you take effective notes and think in terms of themes as you study each night, you’ll be prepared for every type of test question. You’ll soon find that, in understanding the theme of each lesson or chapter, you’ll begin to think more like your teacher thinks. You will also begin to form a deeper understanding of the test material overall.
