Very often description, narration, and reflection may be combined in the same composition; the line that divides the descriptive essay from the expository, and the expository from the reflective, is sometimes harrow and diffi­cult to define, while, as we shall see later, it is possible for the same subject to be placed in any one of the four classes according to the point of view from which it is regarded.

The Hot Steamy Tamales

Tamales are my favorite meal to eat because the deliciousness made my eyes sparkle and makes me smile. The tamales are so delicious that my dad and I woke up at one in the morning to go to Amapola. A groceries store in paramount has spectacular dough for the tamales. When we got there, an enormous line stretched about half a mile long to get inside the store for dough; I couldn’t believe it. Finally, during all that time standing in the long line waiting five hours in cold, we got inside the store. There were people everywhere, also trying to get supplies for the tamales grabbing what ever they can. I had to hurry to get the meat, chili, carrots bell pepper, cheese and corn husks for the tamales. My dad was getting the dough before they ran out. We always make two kinds of tamales. One of the tamales has chili sauce with shredded pork and the other has carrots, green bell pepper and cheese inside. I prefer the one that has chili sauce. I was happy when we were heading back home; and then sun was starting to rise. My mom started to boil the chucky pork meat, and then she started to make her luscious sauce. The kitchen was cluttered with a large bowl of dough on the table surround by corn husk. Also, on the table I saw chopped carrots, bell peppers, shredded cheese and the tool to flatten the dough. A gigantic pot for the tamales was sitting on a chair, close to the table ready for storing. The ventilating fans humming at full speed trying to keep the house cool. The house was so hot, but I did not care. The smelled of the delicious fragrance was so powerful the heat did not overwhelm me. After the meat finished cooking, so I helped my mom shred it into thin pieces. Then she started to prepare them. She got two pieces of husks overlapping of each other, puts a small ball of dough, and then smashes it. Then she puts on top the juice meat with chili sauce and places it on the pot. Later on when they were being cook, I smelled the aroma of the tamales sweeping into my room. Finally, Mama yells “Food is ready!” Everyone gathers around the pot ready to eat tamales. I got my tamales and saw the steam coming out. I sat down and began to un-wrap the husks; there it was luscious, fresh tamale. I took a bite; it felt magical like a piece of heaven in my mouth. Because it was so spectacular, I was happy. Therefore, tamales would be my magnificent meal to eat because nothing out there can beat the delicious flavor.

Tornados are one of the most terrifying natural events that occur, destroying homes and ending lives every year. April 29th, 1995, a calm, muggy, spring night I may never forget. Joey and I were admiring the beautiful blue bonnets, which traveled for miles like little blue birds flying close to the ground. The warm breeze brushed across the tips of the blue bonnets and allowed them to dance under the perfectly clear blue sky. In the distance, however, we could see darkness. A rumbling sky was quickly approaching.

We continued down the infinitely long interstate towards our destination. Thunder clouds continued to rumble in, like an ocean tide rolling closer and closer to the beach front. Within minutes the entire landscape was calm and dark. It looked like a total eclipse of the sun, and the once moving blue bonnets were now completely still and somber. The rain began to trickle down out of the sky. The sound of the rain, as it hit our car, was like that of pins dropping on a metal surface. The intensity of the rain increased as we ventured further into the eye of the storm.

As we approached an overpass, we noticed a parking lot of used cars piled underneath. By now, the rain had created a wall of water, which surrounded our car. We decided to pull over and sprint to the underpass to join the other frightened observers. What Joey and I were unaware of, what we couldn’t possibly know, was that a tornado was already on the ground frantically spinning its way towards our position.

The twister had just hit the ground and was gaining power and strength as it devoured everything in its path. We found ourselves even more frightened than we were just moments ago. The whirling “finger of God” was approaching us at a tremendous rate. The sound surrounding us was outrageous, it sounded something like a steam locomotive roaring towards us, whining and whistling with an awful high pitched roar. As the rumbling cloud of darkness approached us, we started to realize it’s outstanding power. This event would be one that we wouldn’t soon forget. The rain had almost completely stopped, but the wind was nearly blowing us off the ground as we huddled together under the overpass. We could hear the screeching sounds of car tires as they started sliding across the rain-soaked cement pavement. Electrical explosions lit up the darkened sky as the tornado ripped over power lines, snapping them as if they were toothpicks. Screams erupted from the crowd as the tornado crossed directly over us, smashing large objects into the overpass payment. We were terrified as the twister rumbled over the roadway leaving us untouched.

Shortly thereafter it vanished from the sky, leaving only shattered pieces of falling fence posts and telephone polls. Everyone slowly unraveled from the huddle that had protected them moments earlier. The sun started poking holes in the dark rumbling sky; the wind and rain had completely ceased, leaving it morbidly calm. The sun burned away every trace of lingering darkness in the sky. It was amazing to look back and see a mile long trail of destruction surrounded by homes and fences that were left totally untouched.

I remember thinking to myself how amazing this moment was, and how grateful I was to be alive. Anytime I look back on those few moments of my life, it makes me realize that I must cherish every single moment of it.

Descriptive Essay

The day started like any other. Quiet, but with an underlying vibration waiting to explode. Freshly brewed coffee and the sharp smell of disinfectant mixed in the air like a foreign perfume. Uniformed staff busied themselves with paperwork while waiting for the moment we all knew would come with the lunch hour approaching. It was a typical morning in the emergency room of Presby Plano.

We were all standing around, relaxed, discussing our previous weekend adventures. As the call came over the radio we swiftly took our places in expectation of what was to come. A construction worker was hit in the head with a 500-pound slab of granite swinging from a crane. The crane operator didn’t see him as he moved that solid piece of rock from one point to the next.

The soft rustle of protective gear being put on over scrubs filled the room as we methodically dressed for the trauma that was about to roll through the door. We tied masks with eye shields around our heads as carts wheeled past into the room in which we would perform our heroic duties.

“ETA, one minute.”, the radio crackled. We calmly looked at each other with the look of serious determination running across our faces, we shot each other glances that said, “We can make this right.” Lights swirled in the courtyard as we shuffled toward the rough sound of the ambulance’s motor. Doors swung open as patient history supplied by the EMT resonated over the sound of the truck. We parted like the waves of the Red Sea to let the gurney wheel by into the trauma room.

A calmness floated in the air as if giving cognitive reasoning a resounding voice. We assembled quickly and stood in our positions. I was only a volunteer, only there to observe, yet I was thrown quickly into the swift dance of saving a life.

Latex gloves flew onto my hands as I grabbed wads of gauze to soak up the fluids running from the patient’s wounded head. As I stood there applying just enough pressure to keep the blood from spurting everywhere, I could feel everything sink in; adrenaline pumping, the brightness of the lights, the smell of fresh blood, the rushed haze around me. What was I doing in the middle of this chaos? At that moment in time I was the only one in the room with hands on the patient. Everyone else was scurrying around, moving things from this room to the next.

Even though I didn’t speak a word of Spanish and the patient didn’t speak a word of English, his moans were clear enough. He was in agony and all I could do was try and hold his massive gash closed long enough for someone to inject pain medication. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” I kept reassuring, not knowing if he understood what I was saying. After what seemed like an eternity that went by in a flash, more people filled the room and the man was wheeled under the surgical light reserved for those with serious injuries. A doctor turned to me and said, “Can you please take off my watch?” I jumped to the command like a seasoned pro and changed my gloves to help with the next procedure.

A technician beside me peeled open a plastic container and mixed a pungent concoction of antibiotics to adorn the patient’s head before any further action was taken. With a syringe filled with numbing medicine, a nurse injected small doses into and around the patient’s head. Next came a small, disposable drill-like apparatus that was filled with clear saline solution to irrigate the wound. Rat-tat-tat-tat! As the physician irrigated the laceration harsh noise rang out in the quiet room like a jack hammer, catching a few of us off guard. Sterile water spewed from the spout of the irrigation device onto the skull of the hurt man. After a few minutes, the wound was clean and the bleeding controlled. Staples were clamped onto his head, closing the once gaping hole.

The doctor left the trauma room, leaving us to pick the bits of tissue from the hair that remained on the man’s head. The two of us remaining gathered around his head and proceeded to snag the soft gobs of pink flesh from his hair as gently as possible, so as not to disturb our newly finished work. He was taken to another room to recover as we left the scene of the previous mayhem. Staff congratulated me on a job well done, as this was my first trauma. I felt proud and alive, I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I will never forget that moment realization hit home.

The Football Experience

In the beginning, there was football. The official said, Let the stadium lights come on, and they came on. The football players came onto the field, and they saw the light was good. Other teams started to show up and practice on the battle ground, otherwise known as the “playing field.” Fans shouted, and cheerleaders went on about their playful acts. Parents, brothers, sisters, and close friends all piled into the stands to see the game of the year. The official stepped out onto the moist grass at Williams Stadium in Plano, Texas. The time was seven o’clock p.m. on a Thursday night. He paused for a moment, looked at his stopwatch, and blew his whistle. Gigantic muscular men came from out of nowhere as the fans began to cheer, waving various flags, and clanging cow bells. The bells sounded like a wind chime in an April shower, all different sounds at different times.

The players ran out to the middle of the stadium. A smell of hatred and resentment came about in the air. The crowd came unglued from their seats. The sounds of various noisemakers filled the air once again. Parents and grandparents alike came to their feet in the stands. Cars stopped on the street in front of the stadium, as they honked their horns, and cheered for their team of choice. As the two burly men stood in the middle of the field, many thoughts ran through their heads. They both knew someone was going to die, but defeat was out of the question. The official tossed a polished silver quarter into the air. The coin hit the wet grass with a shiny face of George Washington clearly showing. The home team will receive the ball. Both anger infested players shook hands and ran back to their sideline. The fans began to cheer as the players took the field again. Little did the fans know of how the players practiced all week long.

The Clark Cougars had a very intense practice, while the Williams Warriors slacked off, and took an easy week, since their opponent was not that good of a team. The kick-off approached for both teams, almost instantaneously. Memories of past football games, and practices were rushing through our heads. The time clock read fifteen minutes even; time outs were at three a piece, and it was the first quarter. Suddenly, a whistle blew, and brown bundle of pigskin went flying into the air. Running to the ball, one of the Clark Cougars quickly caught the football, stepped left, then to the right, covering positive yardage. Soon after, the ball carrier was brought down by a pack of Warriors, and the ball was first down for the Cougars.

I had been waiting for this moment all of my life. The match up of the century was about to begin. The Clark Cougars have lost 14 years straight to the Warriors. Coaches only daydreamed of beating the undefeated Warriors. As the quarterback called the play, I smiled with joy. The first play of the game was to me. I played running back for the team, so I was going to run the ball. First play, up the middle of the field, I ran for a fifteen yard gain. The next play was to one of my fellow team mates, which he also ran for another large gain of 26 yards. I could not believe my eyes. After all these years, the game was finally here. We, as a team, were slowly tearing apart the Warrior’s defense.

Our offense was dominating the ball, and they could not score against our defense. Shortly after the first quarter, the Cougars took the lead going into the second quarter, fourteen to zero. The start of the second quarter came as a shock to our team. We were starting to get tired, and make little mistakes that cost us a touchdown. One of the cornerbacks was not on the right coverage, and that lead to six points, followed by an extra point after the touchdown. Our team fumbled again on offense, and turned the ball back over to the Warriors, resulting in another Warrior touchdown. We all hung our heads as the Warriors celebrated their score, and taunted our players. As we approached our sideline, the coach had a few words of his own to share with the team. “Listen up here boys, it ain’t over yet. If you give up now, you are going to loose. That is the sport of football. If you give up, you lose.” I was not going to let 5 years of previous football experience go to waste, just because I was tired. We as a team knew our coach was serious, as a tiny tear drop formed in the corner of his eye.

Half time came about, as we all headed to the locker room for a sip of cool water, and a long speech made by the coaches. To my surprise, the coach was very calm with us as he drew out plays with piece of white chalk on the board. The coach mainly concentrated on the linemen, and the quarterbacks. As I sat there in the locker room, I knew what I had to do. I knew that the team was depending on my skills. Visions of victory ran through my head. I visualized the opponent as a measly bowling pin, and myself as the bowling ball. My imagination started to run wild. As I felt the adrenaline running through my veins, my body started to tremble with anger. I thought to myself, “They really do think we can’t win, and I have to prove them wrong.”

The next quarter, our team took the field. With anger and rage in my eyes, I was ready. I was a true lean, mean, killing machine. Nothing was going to get in my way. My head steamed a white smoke. The weather slowly began to get colder a cold front moved in. The sky, covered with clouds, grumbled at us as we called our plays, and ran them. As the end of the third quarter approached us, both teams were overcome with fatigue. The score remained at fourteen to fourteen.

The weather began to get cold, and small droplets of water started to fall from the ocean like sky. I felt the nervousness of the crowd, as the clanging of the cow bells came to a halt. Coaches paced back and fourth, as we headed into the fourth quarter. Each team got two possessions on offense. Neither team had the strength to penetrate the defense. Three minutes remained on the time clock. The weather took over the game, pouring down with rain from the black sky. It was first down and ten for the Clark Cougars. The play was called in the huddle, and the players sprinted up to the line. The play consisted of me running to the right, and the quarter back was going to toss the ball to me. “Down, set, hut, hut, hike!” As I took off to the right side of the field, I suddenly felt a burst of energy. My bones felt relaxed, and my muscles replenished. The quarterback tossed me the ball, as I ran frantically to the outside of the playing field. I couldn’t believe my eyes, as I viewed the hole made for me to run through. Fifteen yards down the field, I met up with one of my old friends. The cornerback slipped and fell onto the turf in his attempt to tackle me. As I darted up the sideline to the endzone, I smiled with joy. The crowd went wild. Popcorn spilled onto the wet ground. Cow bells once again sounded as the raindrops still poured down. I will never forget that moment of my life. The smile on my face was literally being pulled up by strings that wouldn’t seem to let go.

Our kicker went on to kick the extra point, as only one minute remained on the time clock. The Clark Cougars went on to beat the Williams Warriors. I could see it now on the front page of the town news paper. “Clark demolishes Williams for the first time in 14 years!” We finally beat the best team in the world! As we celebrated, and jumped around on the soggy grass, a tear came to my eye. It was all hitting me now. I finally achieved the goal of my life! I could not control the tremendous smirk on my face. As I watched the coach from the opposing team cry in agony, I thought to myself, “That must be what they call the agony of defeat.” I knew that the moment of my life I had long waited for, was gone. Only memories are left in my mind, and I cherish every single one of them.

There are several methods writers use to describe something in an essay. They may choose vivid, fresh language, or they may use examples, or they might take something ordinary and by comparing it with something extraordinary, make it interesting, or they may use their senses.

When someone asks you to describe something, the first step you might take is to jot down the first words that come to you. If I say “egg,” for instance, you might write down the following string of associations: “round, white, brown, fresh, scrambled, farmer, chicken, goose, over-easy.” But another student might write down “ostrich,” while yet another chooses “dinosaur.” Then a medical student might chime in with “ovulation, zygote, baby.” At some point, someone else may take it a step further and mention “fragility.” The point is that the one little word “egg” can conjure up a number of associations, all coming at the subject in a different way. So when you are asked to describe an event or a person, start with the obvious, but don’t stay there.

Features

1. A well-focused subject can be ordinary or extraordinary, but you should strive to make it as interesting as possible by emphasizing what makes it interesting or new and unusual. Pick something specific, an event or a person or an animal.

2. How you treat your subject is directly related to how your reader will react to it. Give plenty of specific descriptive detail. If you’re describing an event, watch people moving and hear them talking. Create a dominant impression for your reader.

3. Create a clear pattern of organization. Your introduction should work from general to specific, ending in a thesis sentence. You should have several paragraphs that develop and describe your topic, and your conclusion should restate your thesis or conclude your event.

Let’s say I’m writing a paper about my Uncle George. Watch how I work from general sentences to specific ones:

When I was little, I loved visiting my relatives. Although I was a country girl, I didn’t have any brothers or sisters that were close to my age, nor did my parents enjoy some of the outdoor events that my extended family did. But my aunts and uncles in Manchester, Tennessee, were always doing something fun, especially my Uncle George. Uncle George loved to laugh and he loved to fish and he loved me.

In this first paragraph, I have moved from general (visiting relatives) to more specific (Manchester, Tennessee and Uncle George) to even more specific (Uncle George loved to laugh, fish, and he loved me). My paper now falls into three natural paragraphs, one on laughing, one on fishing, and one on how Uncle George showed his love and how it affected me. Now it’s not imperative that you have three paragraphs in your body, and oftentimes, the three-paragraph body seems trite and boring. Usually, however, that’s not a result of the organization, it’s a result of the writing itself.

Here’s one descriptive paragraph about fishing:

Uncle George and I would head out before it got light. The trek to the pond was always exciting. The earth smelled fresh and new, promising warmth, and as the birds awoke, they’d tentatively practice the prologues to their songs. We’d walk past the apple trees, and I could smell the sharpness of the rotten fruit that had dropped to the ground. Occasionally, I’d slip on a peel, so I learned to be careful not to run too quickly. We’d walk past the water troughs where the tadpoles were busy wiggling their way to froghood and pick up the pond trail on the other side of the musty-smelling old barn. At this point I had to be careful not to get my pole tangled in the underbrush–which constantly grabbed for my dangling hook and bobber–while Uncle George’s flashlight jumped and weaved as he made sure the small circle of light was set for my height. He would hold my hand and tell me about the fish, and I was never scared.

Notice that I use my senses to describe the scene. All of the senses can be used in a descriptive paper–touch, smell, hearing, taste, and vision, although you may just pick one or two. Notice the language, too. “Froghood” is not a word, but it seems to me that it’s better than “adulthood,” which I wrote first. And “froghood” works, does it not?
