Truman Show as representative of a TV Culture

The Truman Show Critique

The Truman Show, another movie about reality television, provides an outlet for the fears that we should have in regards to how far the reality television phenomena will go. The movie also elicits fear concerning corporations and just how much they can own. The fact that Truman himself is “fathered” by a corporation is part of the dichotomy of the movie that contributes to the overall disgust towards everyone involved in deceiving Truman.

The scene when Truman is about to leave his created world is perhaps one of the most profound. The show’s director, who has spent thirty years manipulating Truman’s life calls out from beyond the artificial sky in an attempt to keep Truman from leaving. The ’s ego becomes crystal clear and his god complex emerges when he speaks to Truman about the show he created. However, he attests when talking to the public that it is all reality TV. What really comes into question is the validity of the “reality” created by manipulated events and programmed people.

Truman may have been the only real person in his world, but how accurate is that statement if he is being conditioned the entire time and never has the period of adolescence to grow apart from the conditioning role of parents. The triumph of Truman’s escape is juxtaposed against the feeling of horror that these people can watch him suffer, watch him trapped like a caged animal in a zoo and then turn and laud him for his escape. The Truman Show provides a dark view on reality television and explores fears that emerged when the TV genre became popular.

American Patriots: Soldiers, Citizens, Voters – Sample Definition Paper

Sean Kasugan

English 1111

Dr. Phyllis Johnson

10 February 2005

American Patriots:

Soldiers, Citizens, Voters

The United States is presently at war in Iraq and Afghanistan where American troops are fighting and dying. At home, cars and homes display solid yellow or red, white, and blue ribbons that call for Americans to “Support Our Troops.” It is patriotic for Americans to support their daughters and sons fighting in a war, but this patriotism does not mean that Americans must blindly support the decision to go to war. Being patriotic means that Americans must do the opposite: they must question their government. Questioning the government, voting, and respecting the rights of others are what make true patriots in a democratic society; blind following of one’s government creates dictatorships.
The United States government is not perfect, as evidenced by its history. For example, the government sanctioned the institution of slavery, denied women the right to vote for nearly 150 years, and prolonged a war in Vietnam that the government leaders knew they couldn’t win. Fortunately for the United States, in each of those cases, there were patriots that spoke out against what the United States was doing and brought about change. Without the abolitionist movement in the early nineteenth century, slavery may have existed far longer than it had already been allowed. Suffragettes from the late seventeenth century through 1920 gave women political equality–at least on paper. In more recent times, the protests of the 1960s finally led the United States to negotiate a peace long enough to get its troops out of Vietnam.
The above examples illustrate true patriotism. The government was wrong in its official positions, and the people who opposed those positions were right. Had those right-minded people not openly voiced their disapproval of what the government was doing, our history would not reflect the democratic principles it so publicly espouses. For a democracy to work, its citizens must keep informed and vocally express their approval and disapproval. The United States government should not proclaim that protestors are not patriotic. By their very act of thinking independently from the government, they are being true patriots.
People who agree with a government’s actions are patriots as well–so long as their agreements are based on how they analyze what the government is doing and base their agreement on thought and not on blind obedience. For example, patriotic proponents of the war in Afghanistan base their support on the need to eliminate Al Qaeda and not on simply accepting that the war is correct because government leaders say it is. These supporters for the war are doing so because they have analyzed why American troops are fighting there and have decided that the government is right. Patriotism is based on analysis and reasoned thought; it is not based on blind obedience.
Questioning the government is one part of the definition of an American patriot; a second part is taking that analysis of the government and acting on it through voting. To put it simply, patriots vote. However, voting for the American patriot is not simply casting ballots; it is knowing about the issues and then casting ballots. To vote for Democrats or Republicans simply because the voter has always voted for that party or because the voter’s family has always voted for that party is not being patriotic; it is again being blindly obedient. Voting requires knowledge of the candidates, knowledge of the issues, and ultimately an understanding of one’s own stand on the issues. For example, in 1948, Thomas Dewey was predicted by nearly all news services to win the Presidential election over incumbent Harry Truman. However, when election day was over, Truman had won by over 2 million votes. What the news services didn’t realize was that the United States was full of patriotic Americans who thought about their votes and didn’t simply follow trends. Truman, a supporter of stronger civil rights legislation and fighting communism in Korea, won because Americans thought about those issues and voted accordingly (Blum et al. 772).
Voting is a patriotic act, but most patriots go beyond voting and actively participate in the elections by campaigning for preferred candidates or issues. Active involvement in elections by patriotic voters creates a stronger base for candidates, who otherwise have only themselves and paid staff on which to depend. American patriots are people who work for their country’s good based on what they see as good for their country. Thus, when California citizens campaigned for Barbara Boxer in 1992 for the United States Senate, they were actively working for increased funding for crime prevention and paramedic training, two issues about which Boxer has been actively vocal (“The Issues”). These people were telling the rest of California that they believed that Boxer’s work for these issues would make a better California and United States. Just as patriotic soldiers volunteered for the Continental Army in 1774 to create a new nation that would better their lives, so did patriotic soldier voters volunteer for the Boxer campaign in 1992 to create a better world. Patriots are voters and workers!
Lastly, and most importantly, patriots respect the rights of others and demonstrate by actively contributing to the equal rights of all Americans. One specific action that patriots perform is willingly paying taxes. Without tax income, the national, state, and local governments would not be able to . People would go uneducated, hungry, and sick in a world without police protection, good roads, , and government-funded health care for those citizens who cannot afford it. Patriots may wish that they could have the tax money in their own pockets, but patriots also realize that this tax money is necessary for a country that must meet the needs of all its citizens. Paying taxes shows respect for the government and for its citizens through being an active contribution to a stable, democratic society.
Another specific patriotic action is showing respect for other cultures. Following the Al Qaeda terrorist attacks on the United States on 11, 2001, reports came in of individual attacks on Muslims and people of Arab heritage in the United States. A Pakistani store owner was killed in Dallas; two Egyptian-Americans were killed in separate incidents in California; and in Gary, Indiana, a man turned an assault rifle on an Yemeni-born United States citizen. In what is probably the worst incident, 300 Americans marched in Chicago in an anti-Arab parade, with one man proclaiming, “‘I’m proud to be an American, and I hate Arabs, and I always have’” (Robinson). Well, patriotic Americans are not proud of him. An American patriot understands that in a democratic nation, an entire group is not judged by the actions of a few individuals. If a group were to be judged by a few individuals, then all Caucasian, Christian Americans should be hated because the bombers at the Oklahoma Federal building were white, Christian, American citizens.
The traditional picture of an American patriot is of a soldier in uniform, proudly carrying the American flag and a rifle. But that picture falls seriously short of the true picture of an American patriot. The true picture would show millions of people, of all races and heritage, some carrying protest signs, some handing out campaign literature, and everyone carrying a ballot.

Definition Essay, How to

I. A definition essay defines a , term, or concept in depth by providing a personal commentary on what the specific subject means.

A. Most physical objects have a definition about which most people agree.

1. Most people will agree on what trees, windows, computers, and pencils are in general.

2. These objects all have specific physical properties that most people can agree on through the use of their physical senses.

B. However, abstract terms, such as love, pain, or patriotism, have different meanings for different individuals since such terms play on people’s feelings more than their physical senses.

C. The definition essay provides a personal, extended definition of such terms by linking or comparing the term to a previous definition and by illustrating how that term should be applied.

II. Setting up the definition essay

A. Select a subject carefully.

1. Since such essays are personal in nature, select your subject based on your own need to clarify the term.

a. For example, if you feel that the  marriage should be defined in a limited manner, that term would make a good subject for a definition essay.

b. Perhaps as a parent, you want to define what the term discipline means from your of view.

2. Select a term or subject that you know well enough so that you can provide specific examples to illustrate your definition.

a. For example, if you aren’t familiar with the term platonic love, don’t attempt to define it in an extended essay.

b. The subject of the essay must be familiar enough to you that you can readily supply specific examples.

3. Don’t select a subject either too broad or too narrow to fit the parameters of your essay.

a. For example, the  hat may be too narrow for you to define in an extended essay.

b. On the other hand, the term love may be too broad or general since pinning it down to a single definition is very difficult.

B. Once you have selected a subject, outline your paper carefully before writing.

1. Outlining will help you determine the specific points you want to cover in the definition and out where you need examples.

2. Here are some suggestions for how to outline a definition paper:

I. Introduction

A. Attention getter

1. You may want to include the traditional or dictionary definition here to provide a basis for your personal definition.

2. You may want to open with a contradictory image to what would be your image to illustrate that definition.

B. Thesis: State how you define the term. If you can write the definition using specific points, you will find the definition easier to follow when writing the paper.

II. Body

A. Background information:

1. Often unnecessary in this type of paper

2. However, you may need to provide some background about the term or your connection to the term.

B. one

1. The first part of your definition of the term.

2. Example to illustrate that .

3. Analysis of how the example illustrates the .

C. two

1. The second part of the definition of the term.

2. Example to illustrate that .

3. Analysis of how the example illustrates the .

D. three

1. The third part of the definition (if there is one)

2. Example to illustrate that .

3. Analysis of how the example illustrates the .

E. four, etc.

III. Conclusion

A. Review your definition’s main points

B. Closing attention getter

1. Sometimes a reference back to the opening attention-getter is a good way of unifying the entire essay.

2. You may want to close with an explanation of how your definition has affected you.

3. Here is the outline for the sample definition paper on patriotism:

I. Introduction

A. Attention getter: Traditional definition of patriotism (as perceived in an image)

B. Thesis: Patriotism is speaking out when a person feels the country is right or wrong, voting, campaigning, and respecting others.

II. Body

A. Speaking out when country is wrong

1. Vietnam

2. Slavery

3. Women’s right to vote

B. Speaking out when country is right

1. Afghanistan

2. Health care

C. Voting

1. Making a choice based on one’s needs

2. Being involved in the voting process

D. Campaigning

1. Finding a candidate who represents country’s needs

2. Barbara Boxer from California

E. Respecting others

1. Paying taxes.

2. Respecting others’ points of view

3. Arab-American prejudice after 9/11.

III. Conclusion

A. Review of patriot as protestor, voter, and respectful citizen.

B. Closing attention getter: return to introduction’s image of patriot

III. Writing the definition essay

A. Make sure that you have a good, specific thesis that tells readers just how you will define the term.

B. Follow your outline to remind yourself when you need examples and analysis of those examples.

1. Modify your outline when you think you need to.

2. Remember not to paragraph based on your outline’s points.

C. Use good, specific examples to illustrate each .

1. Examples allow readers to visualize how the definition can be applied.

2. You may need to do research to find good examples.

3. See Researching the Topic.

D. Provide good transitions to link all parts of the essay.

E. Have a good conclusion that brings the parts of the definition together and leaves readers with an image of how the definition is applied.

F. Proofread carefully.

V. See sample definition paper.

Sample Essay on Love Definition

Example of Definition essay, Narrative Sample Paper

“…Real love is nothing less than spiritual love…”

Raymond Carver’s “What we talk about when we talk about love”

Love… So many words have been told, so many poems have been composed, so many songs have been sang. But if you ask a person what love really is you always start getting different answers and sometimes those answers have nothing in common.

What is Love? Definition Essay

For some people love is a complete devotion and endless adoration, for others is a temporary feeling that will disappear in time. For some people it is a fairy-tale and for others it is a dream come true. Some people say love is once-in-a lifetime thing and others believe that after one love comes another. The more you try to find a universal definition of love – the more you get confused with all these words you get from different people around you. The more you think you get closer to the true meaning of this feeling- the more you realize that the definition of love is probably your own, unique and sincere truth about love. Throughout the history a lot of writers suggested their understanding of love to their readers. And it is important to say that books about love do influence a lot people’s mind, it especially concerns young people. These books show the way authors look upon marriage and love, betrayal and devotion. For instance, let us compare the visions of marriage we observe in three short stories: Raymond Carver’s “What we talk about when we talk about love”, Kate Chopin’s story “The Storm” and Irwin Shaw’s “The Girls in their Summer Dresses”.
Raymond Carver’s “What we talk about when we talk about love” is a story about two couples who gather on a pre-dinner drinking meeting and one of them-Mel, starts talking about love. He cannot admit that his wife’s abusive ex-husband, Ed, could possibly love her while he was dragging her around the room by her ankles. “That’s not love, and you know it,” Mel says. “I don’t know what you’d call it, but I sure know you wouldn’t call it love.” His wife Terri does not stop trying to persuade him that it was love. Though she understands that her ex-husband may be called a sadist and even pathological she still explains his conduct basing on the feeling he had for her. Deep inside she believes that he just could not find another way to free his feelings other then by violence. His love erupted in violence and than he committed a suicide. Ed, though he is dead, is basically the main of the story. Terri, Mel’s wife talks about Ed with some sort of nostalgia for the old times they had together. Some words she says out that she thinks Mel will not ever love her like that. The group continues drinking. Mel notes that as much as they love each other, if they were all married to someone else, or their loved ones would have died it would make no difference in their lives. All of them look empty inside, pretending to love and hoping that no one will ever find out their play. Kate Chopin’s “The Storm” main is Calixta, a married woman that turns out to stay alone at home during a storm, while her husband and little son stay at the store to wait until the storm stops. A gentleman named Alcee appears, asking for shelter on Calixta’s porch. She lets him in and at the moment when she accidentally falls into his arms and they free out their for each other. It was a storm in the first place inside the house, a storm of a forbidden and only then an outside rainstorm. The fact
Calixta is able to continue her married life without guilt and without punishment after her one-shot affair seems extremely shocking. And even more that that – Calixta becomes enlivened and even a better woman than she was before. It seems so unreal and strange. It completely shows that the author has sexually-liberated vision of marriage. Irwin Shaw’s “The Girls in their Summer Dresses” continues shocking the reader by view on marriage of different people. It is a story about a couple walking down the Fifth Avenue. Michael holds Frances’s but keeps looking at every girl passing by with a look of a single man.
“You always look at other women,” Frances said. “At every damn woman in the city of New York.” They start discussing this problem in a bar and Frances seems very hurt. “I feel rotten inside, in my stomach, when we pass a woman and you look at her and I see that look in your eye and that’s the way you looked at me the first time…”. Michael assures Frances that he has not touched another woman since their wedding. But some words he says completely shock: “ I can’t help but look at them. I can’t help but want them. I love you, but I also want them…”. After these words Frances makes Michael admit that one day he is going to make a move. And when he does that the only favor she asks him for is at least to stop talking how pretty this or that woman is. And they just go on being together and decide to call their friends to spend the weekend. That completely amazes the reader. It is really hard to say which relationship offers the most realistic view of marriage, but Kate Chopin’s story, “The
Storm” in the sense that a treason like that did not mean anything and the woman continues her married life with a new discovery of her sexuality. But honestly, this has nothing to do with love and is just the most realistic picture of a marriage. The violent type of marriage depicted in Raymond Carver’s “What we talk about when we talk about love” is really frightening and fortunately not very frequent. What is described in this novel is not love at all and it is nothing but pathology. And love described in Irwin Shaw’s “The Girls in their Summer Dresses” shows us that kind of “love” when you want other people and know that one day you are going to make a move towards it. It is very hard to make a division of this or that marriage being “good” or “bad”. Analyzing the marriages depicted in these works it is interesting to out that the “ good” marriage would be the one in “The Storm”, not with unrealized expectations like in “What we talk about when we talk about love”, not with pathological attraction to other women like in “Girls in their summer dresses”. It is individual for every person, and what one person may consider being a perfect marriage other will consider being his worst nightmare. Love is what people in these stories feel comfortable with it to be. Love comes and goes moving through these stories like a shadow. What about spiritual love?

Economic Definition Essay

1.Inroduction
The economic has always been as issue for the contemporary society. This is primary due to the fact that it is economic that gives any country the potential to prosper and grow. Being the attribute of “strong” countries, mainly belonging to the first world, economic creates a completely new life-standard for people. In other worlds the actual goal of the economic is the improvement of the quality of life of ordinary citizens. Economic in other words is the growth of the country’s wealth that is to improve the well being of the country’s inhabitants. The economical expansion is the guarantee of the growth of the number of investments which are able to convert a developing country into one of those belonging to the “strong” group that are called “developed” countries.  The key of the economic is innovation. Innovational ideas get investments and therefore companies are able to establish the production of a sufficient amount of products and distribute them to the population, creating an unbreakable economic system of goods and services. As economic implies innovations, a country that has a stable and significant economic after the sphere of basic human needs, will develop its technological sphere which a wider range of the economical . Nowadays, the technological is the door to the successful economic future of developed countries and further economic of the developing ones.

2. General notions about the economic
The process of economic is a multi-sided process for the improvement of life-quality includes numerous aspects such as: the of the social sphere, the of culture and national creativity, the creation of favorable social climate, social security, labor supply and many others. Nevertheless, on the priorities of economic is the creation of a competitive business environment where competition will be the driving force for the of the companies and therefore the economic of the country. Another important aspect of the economic is the of the consumer’s market, the creation of gold reserves and the of the infrastructure. All of these are impossible without the technological of the country. GDP is one of the indicators of the economic of the country, nevertheless it is not appropriate to use only this indicator in order to make conclusion concerning the economic and therefore the well being of the inhabitants of the country. This is primarily due to the fact that GDP cannot measure the of the leisure time, the condition of the environment, the true ability of people to be free in what they do or say, their confidence in the system of social justice and their opportunity to get education and health care.
At the present moment tough such countries as Latin America, Africa, and Asia are experiencing a certain economical growth no economic occurs as the number of “vital” needs such ashaving a place to live, food to eat and a doctor to take care about the health is not growing. The standard of living remain the same and only get worse as the basic necessities are not distributed properly and the population is in a constant stress that results into the work-productivity and therefore on the competency of the company they are working for.
3. Todaro’s economic
Professor Michael Todaro in his work “Economic ” identifies the meaning of the economic throught the main objectives that it actually pursues. One of the most important objectives on the opinion of Michael Todaro is the production of the “life necessities” for the people in need and therefore providing them with sufficient amount of food to survive physically, through providing a shelter for people that have no other option than to live on the street and what is even more important the ability and readiness of health institutions to provide such people with health care. Though the production of all the necessary products to satisfy these basic needs is important, the broadening of their implication is vital in terms of a corresponding economic .  Economic does not just cover the “black spots” but identifies their reason and find a way to prevent their existence. The second objective of the economic after the satisfaction of the survival needs according to the opinion of Michael Todaro is the general raise of the standards of living. When the conditions of living change the person’s self-esteem growth and he starts settling for more or in other words acquires ambitions. These ambitions are of a special importance as they motivate a person for at least staying on the same level if not for further achievements. The third Todaro’s objective of the economic is that when a person start getting all the required things for his successful living he starts having more economic and social choices, reduces his fear of the unknown future. Such a person is more likely to succeed and prosper financially. The more people in the country feel save and protected the higher is the productivity and the technological competency of the country.  Therefore the economic improves the well being of the inhabitants and the well being of the inhabitants is in its turn the guarantee of the economic growth and literally the economic itself, too.

Basically, Michael Todaro proclaims three main functions of the economic . The first one implies the production of the basic goods, as it has been mentioned before; the second one is saving and developing the conditions established through the sufficient production; and the third one is the reduction of social anxiety through sufficient labor supply. The labor supply factor requires a separate attention, as it is the predictor of the growth of population. The more people feel confident if the financial well-being for tomorrow the more they are open to the perspective of having children and providing them with everything needed.
Speaking about the profound definition of the economical in terms of labor supply it is necessary to mention the work of Harris and Todaro “Migration, unemployment & : a two-sector analysis”. In this book Todaro & Harris offers a Harris-Todaro model of rural-urban migration that occurs due to the economic necessity. One of the factors preventing the developing countries from converting into developed countries is the urban unemployment. According to Todaro and Harris the rate of migration flow is influenced by the wages offered by the labor supply. Ordinarily the wages that rural inhabitants expect to get in urban areas are way higher than the rural ones. This difference causes instability and raises unemployment greatly, creates the necessity to industrialize rural areas in order to make the economic situation more stable and stimulates the economic of the country. In spite of the existence of numerous models of economic , the main priority is still the reduction of the poverty rate, the improvement of social justice and therefore the elimination of inequality and the employment growth.  The Harris-Todaro model does not completely explain the potential economic growth and regression along with other numerous models of economic .

It may appear that there are a lot of indicators of the economic of a given country; nevertheless after the analysis of the entire conclusion is that these indicators are actually very limited. They include such factors as life expectancy (health care), the average income per person (all the required products), and the level of the of the education and it accessibility (with a following employment). All the of listed above are the standards of living. And it can be also added that these standard may be viewed as universal standards that define the economic of any country.

4.Conclusion
The term economic gets a unique understanding owing to the books of professor Todaro. The ” implies the progress and the positive changes in the growth of the wealth of a given country and therefore the growth of the well-being of its citizens. It is necessary to mention that the economic may be seen as the synonymy of the well-being of the country. The term economic also emphasizes the importance of the constant economic growth that is achieved through the competency of the national companies and their work force. The process of the economic requires certain adjustments that will stimulate the creation of various innovations, raising the economic competency of the countries. And though there is not accepted theory of economic there still is a variety of factors that can help to identify the important of the economic and the means of achieving it. Another vital part of making a country economically developed are investments that help to develop the manufacture and production of the sufficient amount of products enough to be distributed in order to cover the vital needs of the population and guarantee its well-being and therefore economical .

Definition Essay Friendship

Friendship, defined from Webster’s Dictionary as, the state of being friends, or a friendlyfeeling. Friends, on the other hand, are defined as people whom one knows well and is fond of. The second definition states a friend as an ally, supporter, or sympathizer. My personal definitionof what friendship is, is a feeling or emotion expressed in such a way that another feels wantedand important, a relationship between a person or persons where everyone has some companionto talk to when their in need of one. I would define friends as people whom you can have severaltypes of relations with and feel several emotions for that person. Someone that one might go to intime of need. However, friendships differ between people. For example, the friendship thatsomeone may have between them and their parents would be different than the friendship theymight have with someone their age. There are many different friendships that people hav

A friend is someone who will give you strength and help you getthrough the hard times. If you are just friends with someone they may not know exactly everythingabout you and that person may not be the first person you might run to in order to just talk tosomeone, but you could go to them if you had to. The relationship could grow into a best friendrelationship. They stand by your side and take up for you no matter what. Whether it be with a person or an animal. Sometimes peoplewho are lonely find that they have a companionship with their dog or cat. But, if you aren’t married then you stillprobably go to your best friends and tell them everything going on between you and your lover. To me a best friend is thought of as a person you tell everything to. That way you neverfeel alone or unimportant. Most of the time that results because they are usually the ones you talk to the most so eventuallythe two become close and they find themselves expressing their feelings to each other withouteven realizing that they are becoming closer every time. They know yourdeepest darkest secrets, and you know theirs as well. The same goes for being close to their siblings.

Definition Essay – Expository Writing

Many people believe that being a good friend is an important quality.
Think about what it means to be a friend. Brainstorm some ideas about
what a good friend means to you, then write a four to five paragraph
definition essay explaining what a good friendship means to you.

Introduction – Your definition of friendship. Try to begin your essay
with a catchy opening, briefly introduce what your paper will be about.
You will focus on three separate qualities that make up a good friend.

2nd paragraph – Describe the first quality that makes up a good friend.
You can provide specific examples from your own life. My most important
quality in a good friend would be a good listener, who is always willing
to give me advice and help me out whenever I am in need. Think about what
matters most when you are choosing your friends.

3rd paragraph – Describe the second quality that makes up a good friend.
My second quality in any of my friends would be that they make me laugh
and can cheer me up if I am feeling down. Once again, elaborate when you
are writing. I would give you a specific example of when I was down, and
‘how’ my friends helped me feel better by making me laugh.

4th paragraph or conclusion – Describe the third quality of a good friend.
My third quality would be any friend of mine has to have similar values
and beliefs as me, and enjoy the same pastimes as me, such as physical
activities such as running or volleyball, and similar music tastes, etc.
If you don’t write about a third quality, summarize what you have written
so far. Your conclusion is similar to your introduction, just restate
what you have already written and try to close or finish your paper with a
strong statement such as : I don’t know how I would go on if it weren’t
for my friends. My best friends listen to me when I am in need, make me
laugh when I’m sad, and allow me to enjoy all of my favorite pastimes!
