Truman Show as representative of a TV Culture

The Truman Critique

The Truman , another movie about reality television, provides an outlet for the fears that we should have in regards to how far the reality television phenomena will go. The movie also elicits fear concerning corporations and just how much they can own. The fact that Truman himself is “fathered” by a corporation is part of the dichotomy of the movie that contributes to the overall disgust towards everyone involved in deceiving Truman.

The scene when Truman is about to leave his created world is perhaps one of the most profound. The ’s director, who has spent thirty years manipulating Truman’s life calls out from beyond the artificial sky in an attempt to keep Truman from leaving. The character’s ego becomes crystal clear and his god complex emerges when he speaks to Truman about the he created. However, he attests when talking to the public that it is all reality TV. What really comes into question is the validity of the “reality” created by manipulated events and programmed people.

Truman may have been the only real person in his world, but how accurate is that statement if he is being conditioned the entire time and never has the period of adolescence to grow apart from the conditioning role of parents. The triumph of Truman’s escape is juxtaposed against the feeling of horror that these people can watch him suffer, watch him trapped like a caged animal in a zoo and then turn and laud him for his escape. The Truman provides a dark view on reality television and explores fears that emerged when the TV genre became popular.

Critical review writing

What is a critical review?

A critical review is an evaluation of an academic text eg: an article, report, essay or book. You are asked to make judgments, positive or negative, about the text using various criteria. The information and knowledge in the text needs to be evaluated, and the criteria that should be used can vary depending on your discipline. That is, management, sociology, information technology, or literature may use different criteria. All critical reviews, however, involve two main tasks: summary and evaluation.

Summary/Description

Evaluation/Judgement

A description of the text:

  • The topic, or the main question it proposes to .
  • Why does the author think the question(s) is important?
  • The arguments (answers with reasons) that it makes.
  • The structure of the text or the method used to the question.
  • The evidence used to support answers.
  • The conclusions reached in the text.
  • Any further questions raised, but not answered in the text.

Be careful not to give too much detail, especially in a short review.

YOUR judgment about the quality or of the text (for other researchers, or to practitioners in the field, or to students).

An evaluation of the text using criteria, appropriate to your discipline.

When evaluating the text you could some of the following questions. The underlined terms are possiblecriteria:

  • Is the question the text tries to relevant, interesting, new, useful?
  • Who will find the text useful?
  • Does the text give new answers to an old question?
  • Is the text detailed, or brief? Simple or complex?
  • Is the evidence presented to support the extensive? Strong? Weak? Contradictory?
  • Are the conclusions reached final, or preliminary?

Process of a review

  1. Skim read the text – note the main question or questions the text tries to and the main answers it gives.
  2. Think of evaluation criteria. Talk about the text and criteria with classmates.
  3. Read the text again and note the important points in detail such as the subject, question, arguments and/or evidence, and conclusions made, and your evaluation using your criteria.
  4. Read related texts, note differences, similarities.
  5. Outline critical review, matching points of description with evaluation criteria.
  6. Start review.

Structure of a critical review

Parts of a critical review

Examples

Title:

Usually looks like an entry in a bibliography.

Kotter, J 1990, ‘What Leaders Really Do’, Harvard review, vol. 68, no. 3, p. 103.

Introduction should contain:

  • A general overview of the topic or question(s) of the text.
  • Your evaluation of the importance of the topic or question.
  • An explanation of how the critical review will be organised.

Leadership is different from management and this article provides a clear, cogent explanation of the difference.

(From Coyle 2000)

Body of critical review should contain:

1. Summary/description of the text

Kotter examines the difference between leadership and management across three major sets of tasks: setting direction versus planning and budgeting; aligning people versus organisation and staffing; and motivating versus controlling and problem solving.

(Adapted from Coyle 2000)

2. Evaluation of the text (note underlined criteria used)

Kotter’s insights, tools, and ideas for action are relevant but the need for more insight is great. [you should explain why in more detail]

(From Coyle 2000)

You may not always feel you are able to judge whether the argument in a text is correct or not. It may be useful to explain first how the arguments given in the text are the same, or different from arguments given in other texts on the same topic. Then, if they are different, explain which argument you find more convincing and why.

Like Mintzberg, Kotter concludes that the jobs of a manager and a leader are not filled with neatly segmented tasks such as planning or organising.

(From Gibson 1999)

It may be necessary to read widely about a topic before making judgments.

Conclusion:

Critical reviews don’t always need a conclusion so you must decide whether to include one or not. If you think a conclusion is necessary it should reiterate your overall view of the text.

In sum, this is some of Kotter’s best work. It is a good resource for the practising manager who wants a quick and reliable, even practical source of information on what constitutes effective leadership today.

(Adapted from Gibson 1999)

Examples of critical analysis

Part of becoming a successful critical reader is being able to translate the thoughts you had whilst reading, into your .  Below are some written examples of the observations a critical reader may make whilst commenting on various issues in text.

NOTE:  The critical analysis component of each example below is highlighted in blue.

Overgeneralisations and assumptions

Researchers often make simplifying assumptions when tackling a complex problem, while the results might provide some insight these answers will also likely have some limitations.

Example:
Reading_example_01.gif

Methodological limitations

Researchers may simplify the conditions under which an experiment occurs compared to the real world in order to be able to more easily investigate what is going on.

Example:
Reading_example_02.gif

Objectivity of research

Some research may be bias in its structure.

Example:
Reading_example_03.gif

Limitations due to sample group

Limitations can arise due to participant numbers.

Example:
Reading_example_04.gif
Limitations can also arise if there is a limited range of participants

Example:
Reading_example_05.gif

Limits to applicability

There can be concerns with studies’ applicability, for a number of reasons.

Results not replicated

One such reason could be that the study results have not been replicated in any other study.  If results have not been replicated, it indicates that the results are suggestive, rather than conclusive.

Example:
Reading_example_06.gif

Long term effects unknown

There would be limits to applicability if long term effects have not been tested.

Example:
Reading_example_07.gif

Omissions

It is important to look for things that have not been discussed within studies to ascertain whether this would limit the applicability of the results.

Example:
Reading_example_08.gif

Correlation vs. causation

It is important to be aware that just because one variable is correlated with another, doesn’t necessarily mean that once variable is the cause of another.

Critical Essay

The “critical” has positive as well as negative meanings. You can write a critical essay that agrees entirely with the reading. The “critical” describes your attitude when you read the article. This attitude is best described as “detached evaluation,” meaning that you weigh the coherence of the reading, the completeness of its data, and so on, before you accept or reject it.

A critical essay or review begins with an analysis or exposition of the reading, article-by-article, book by book. Each analysis should include the following points:

1. A summary of the author’s point of view, including
a brief statement of the author’s main idea (i.e., thesis or theme)
an outline of the important “facts” and lines of reasoning the author used to support the main idea
a summary of the author’s explicit or implied values
a presentation of the author’s conclusion or suggestions for action
2. An evaluation of the author’s work, including
an assessment of the “facts” presented on the basis of correctness, relevance, and whether or not pertinent facts were omitted
an evaluation or judgment of the logical consistency of the author’s argument
an appraisal of the author’s values in terms of how you feel or by an accepted standard

Once the analysis is completed, check your work! Ask yourself, “Have I read all the relevant (or assigned) material?” “Do I have complete citations?” If not, complete the work! The following steps are how this is done.

Now you can start to write the first draft of your expository essay/literature review. Outline the conflicting arguments, if any; this will be part of the body of your expository essay/literature review.

Ask yourself, “Are there other possible positions on this matter?” If so, briefly outline them. Decide on your own position (it may agree with one of the competing arguments) and state explicitly the reason(s) why you hold that position by outlining the consistent facts and showing the relative insignificance of contrary facts. Coherently state your position by integrating your evaluations of the works you read. This becomes your conclusions section.

Briefly state your position, state why the problem you are working on is important, and indicate the important questions that need to be answered; this is your “Introduction.” Push quickly through this draft–don’t worry about spelling, don’t search for exactly the right , don’t hassle yourself with grammar, don’t worry overmuch about sequence–that’s why this is called a “rough draft.” Deal with these during your revisions. The point of a rough draft is to get your ideas on paper. Once they are there, you can deal with the superficial (though very important) problems.

Consider this while :

  • The critical essay is informative; it emphasizes the literary work being studied rather than the feelings and opinions of the person about the literary work; in this kind of , all claims made about the work need to be backed up with evidence.
  • The difference between feelings and facts is simple–it does not matter what you believe about a book or play or poem; what matters is what you can prove about it, drawing upon evidence found in the text itself, in biographies of the author, in critical discussions of the literary work, etc.
  • Criticism does not mean you have to attack the work or the author; it simply means you are thinking critically about it, exploring it and discussing your findings.
  • In many cases, you are teaching your audience something new about the text.
  • The literary essay usually employs a serious and objective tone. (Sometimes, depending on your audience, it is all right to use a lighter or even humorous tone, but this is not usually the case).
  • Use a “claims and evidence” approach. Be specific about the points you are making about the novel, play, poem, or essay you are discussing and back up those points with evidence that your audience will find credible and appropriate. If you want to say, “The War of the Worlds is a novel about how men and women react in the face of annihilation, and most of them do not behave in a particularly courageous or noble manner,” say it, and then find evidence that supports your claim.
  • Using evidence from the text itself is often your best option. If you want to argue, “isolation drives Frankenstein’s creature to become evil,” back it up with events and speeches from the novel itself.
  • Another form of evidence you can rely on is criticism, what other writers have claimed about the work of literature you are examining. You may treat these critics as “expert witnesses,” whose ideas provide support for claims you are making about the book. In most cases, you should not simply provide a summary of what critics have said about the literary work.
  • In fact, one starting point might be to look at what a critic has said about one book or poem or story and then a) ask if the same thing is true of another book or poem or story and 2) ask what it means that it is or is not true.
  • Do not try to do everything. Try to do one thing well. And beware of subjects that are too broad; focus your on a particular aspect of a work rather than trying to say everything that could possibly be said about it.
  • Be sure your is well organized. Each section should support the main idea. Each section should logically follow and lead into the sections that come before it and after it. Within each paragraph, sentences should be logically connected to one another.
  • Remember that in most cases you want to keep your tone serious and objective.
  • Be sure your essay is of mechanical and stylistic errors.
  • If you quote or summarize (and you will probably have to do this) be sure you follow an appropriate format (MLA format is the most common one when examining literature) and be sure you provide a properly formatted list of works cited at the end of your essay.
