The Problems With Creationism

Since I was a small child I have been interested in science, specifically the natural sciences. They have always intensely fascinated me. So of course being the curious child I was, I read many volumes on paleontology, paleo-archeology, and geology. During this same time, my parents were deeply involved in the church. They both had just graduated from seminary school and were thinking of starting their own ministry. This of course caused quite a conflict in me. Here on the one hand were all these famous authors telling me how the planet had evolved naturally over eons of time with no intervention from any deity. Then on the other, hand I had my parents and others telling me to trust in God for he was the creator of all. To settle these internal conflicts I read an extensive amount of literature on both creationism’s position and that of main stream science. I settled eventually on one final conclusion. The three most common cases cited for the validity of creationism are unjustly founded.

The Great Flood

The great flood is, of course, the biblical story that tells of Gods judgment of man and His resulting punishment for what He saw as rampant wickedness. As the story goes, man had begun to multiply rapidly on the face of the earth, but to the Lord these men had become wicked. They had only evil thoughts in their hearts and minds. The Lord God decided he would obliterate all life on the planet, except for Noah’s family and the two of every kind of animal and creeping thing (or seven according to the next verse) that they take with them on the ark. Creationists claim that this worldwide flood is responsible for the destruction of the dinosaurs. According to them, the flood is responsible for the extinction of thousands of species. They believe evolution never did occur and the earth is not billions of years old as claimed by main stream science.

Of course, the first problem with the global flood idea is the availability of enough water to cover the whole earth. Using current standards God would have needed 4.4 billion cubic kilometers of water to cover the highest mountains, which the Bible claims the Lord accomplished. One popular explanation by Creationists for the water problem is that a giant vapor canopy once surrounded the whole planet. This had existed since the creation of the world and condensed during the time of the flood. To hold 4.4 billion cubic kilometers of water this vapor canopy would have needed to be 180,000 miles thick. Of course, a vapor canopy thick enough to contain that much water would have blocked all light from reaching the planet surface day and night. In addition, assuming this much water was thrown on the earth, where did it go once the flood had ended? The other problem is their explanation for the fossil record. If indeed it was created by the flood then we should find the remains of prehistoric creatures wildly intermingled with those of modern animals. Dinosaur bones should turn up next to those of deer or caribou for example. There should be no differentiation in the strata layers. However, that simply is not the case. Geology has shown us time and again that the strata layers follow a chronological order. Our ability to locate and exploit this worlds many coal, oil, and natural gas resources is based on this very understanding.

Evolution Has Never Been Observed?

There are two main arguments Creationists use to try and discredit evolution. The first is their claim that no transitional forms have ever been found. They say this proves that evolution did not take place. They also claim that speciation has never been directly observed. Thus, according to them, there is no proof for evolution. Their logic states life was either created or it evolved. If science can show a gradual transition from one form to another then a designer may be ruled out. But if science fails to show such transitions then design may be inferred.

The thing Creationists overlook when trying to prove their case for design is that evolution on the microscopic scale has been directly observed. Experimentation with bacteria has shown that antibiotic resistance can and does arise from beneficial mutation, rather than being already present in the bacteria. A scientist by the name of Joshua Ledenberg did an experiment in which he grew thousands of colonies of genetically identical bacteria from a single bacterial cell that was unable to survive in the presence of streptomycin. He then divided the colonies in half and grew one half with and one half without streptomycin. A few of the colonies survived on streptomycin, because they carried new mutations for resistance. Since the original bacterium from which the colonies were grown was not itself resistant to streptomycin, Ledenberg’s experiment proves that resistance is generated by mutation and is not a quality that needs to be present from the start. In recent years, the development of antibiotic and pesticide resistance has been observed many times. For example, the fact that it occurs is the very reason a new flu vaccine must be developed every year. Another instance where evolution in action has been directly observed comes from Lake Victoria in Africa. Thirty-five hundred years ago, a small body of water became separated from Lake Victoria by a sandbar. There are now five species of fish native only to the new lake. They have apparently evolved from the original species in a geological instant. Two other examples are the rapid speciation of the Faeroe Island house mouse, which occurred in less than 250 years after man first brought it to the island, and the formation of five new species of Cichlid fishes since they were isolated less then 4000 years ago from the parent stock, Lake Nagubago.

The Big Bang Proves Creation?

Most creationism arguments depend upon the notion that the universe had a beginning. Their logic dictates that for there to be a creation, it must have been created at some point. They often fall back on the Big Bang theory to support this idea. While it is perfectly understandable to make such an argument, it is somewhat incorrect in its assumption. As we all know, Edwin Hubbell discovered that the universe is expanding in all directions at the same rate. This means if one were to go backward through time the universe would be getting smaller and smaller until it reached a point of infinite density. This, in general, is the basic Big Bang theory.

What many creation theorists fail to take into account though, and what many high school text books fail to make clear, is exactly what Einstein’s Theory General of Relativity says. Using the general theory, one can infer from the data that the universe should be smaller and smaller the farther one looks back into the past. This only works up to a certain point, however. There is a point in time called the “Planck Time” (named after physicist Max Planck, a pioneer in Quantum Mechanics) before which we can no longer infer behavior about the universe using General Relativity alone. The problem is that prior to Planck Time the universe is so small that quantum mechanical effects become very pronounced. A correct description of the universe prior to this Planck Time therefore requires a synthesis of Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity. Although their are several candidates, no full theory of Quantum Gravity (also known as Unified Field Theory) has been developed. Without such a theory we cannot draw any conclusions about whether the universe had a beginning or not.

Birth Order – The Perfectionist, The Tornado, and The Princess

Before I had children, I did not believe that birth order could affect the personality of a person. But now I have three beautiful yet very different daughters. The parents then pour all their energies into making sure this is true. The child then decides that this is what life is like. The oldest child believes that their hair has to always be perfect with a hair bow that is the exact shade of their carefully chosen ensemble. Their schoolwork reflects this also. They will be at the top of their class in everything from reading to hopscotch. They will also be involved in everything imaginable – drama, girl scouts, cheerleading, youth group, yearbook, honor societies, and the list goes on and on. These are the children you find in gifted classes and are bored if they don’t get challenging enough homework. On top of everything else, things have to be perfect the first time. In my oldest daughter, Megan’s mind, a rough draft of a paper means that the handwriting is messy. These children are also natural born leaders. Bossing their siblings around just comes naturally. This can benefit them when they become CEO’s, politicians, or dictators.

The middle child is the Tornado. The middle child will gladly expound on why life is not fair. They will do this in a loud and very emotional way. No matter their age, they think they should be able to do everything their older and younger siblings do. And if they can’t, “It’s not fair!” is followed by an endless tirade about how they are not loved and how they are going to run away and find people who have no children so they can be an only child. Ten minutes later this same madman will be asking you to listen to a song they wrote about how much they love their siblings or calling you to come see the cute new thing their younger sibling is doing. This child can be very compassionate and loving but life is so unfair to them that they forget to show it sometimes. This child constantly hears “Can’t you be more like your older sister?” This only enflames the child to do even bigger and better things than their older sibling. This makes all of life a competition for this child. They are constantly trying for better grades, bigger trophies, faster times, and higher jumps. If they don’t better their sibling they go into deep depression. If they can do better than their sibling, they strut around and brag for weeks. And they never let their older sibling forget. Life with the Tornado is never boring! In fact, if you ever hear that Hurricane Maddie is heading for Texas, EVACUATE!!! It won’t be a hurricane but my middle daughter in a major meltdown!

Then there’s the baby, the Princess. The youngest believes that life revolves around them. When they are very young they have no motivation to learn to do anything on their own, including crawling, walking or talking. Their older siblings cater to their every need. As the Princess gets older she expects this behavior to continue much to the annoyance of their older siblings and the older siblings can’t figure out how that sweet little baby became such a spoiled brat. Of course, the parents don’t help the situation. This is the “baby” of the family and everybody needs to watch out for them. Maybe this is why our three year old has taken to wearing a crown around the house and demanding to be referred to as “Princess Katie.”

Birth order, I thought it was study done to waste taxpayer’s money, but it does exist. If you still don’t believe it just visit my home for a while. Just don’t forget to bow to the Princess!

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

When any thought of cynicism arises, it conjures an image of bitter thirty something divorcees, single alcoholic fathers, or disillusioned old maids. However, this disease is rampant now among “Gen X’ers”, and it is certainly no surprise with the miasma of food, cars, money, drugs, and of course sex that assaults early twenties men and women with the frenetic pace of a moving el-train. Yet there is no better example of the reason for American youths cynicism than the meager choice of sex partners in the nineties. The problem is not quantity, but most definitely quality. Sexual partners, especially for women fall into three categories: the mechanical, the sensitive, and the “Oh (My God What Have I Done).” Note, however, that there is essentially no “good” category. Is this an oversight? What do you think?

Mr. Mechanical is tall, suave and polished to fine sheen. He could be wearing anything from loafers and a braided belt to a black leather jacket and combat boots, but you can bet he put more thought into his outfit than you did. His theme song is “I’m Too Sexy,” and his opening line is, “Where have I been all your life.” You will run into this gem at your local bar, and after buying you several very expensive drinks with a suspiciously high alcohol content, he will you that, “you are the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen.” At the end of the night, when confronted with your apartment door he breezes in as though he’s already been there before. When he opens your refrigerator to make himself a drink, he sees two oranges, leftover pizza, and a jar of mayonnaise, and then asks if you keep the champagne in the freezer. Mr. Mechanical then asks for the “grand tour” of your 800 square foot, one bedroom apartment, just so you can maneuver yourselves toward the bedroom. He sits down on the bed, crosses his legs, and waits with a Mona Lisa smile. His lovemaking is as choreographed as a broadway musical. He takes exactly three minutes time on each major erogenous zone, removing clothing with each step, yet somehow deftly removing his own clothing as well. He can unhook any type of bra, blindfolded, in the dark with just his teeth. Now comes the inevitable penetration which always lasts exactly fifteen minutes. There is no, “Did you ?” because he naturally assumes, “of course you did.” Afterwards he talks for exactly two minutes then falls asleep on your pillow. When you wake in the morning there is no evidence of his presence except a rose on your pillow with a note that says, “talk to you soon,” but don’t count on it. In fact, the only time you ever hear of him again is when you find out he was with your best friend the previous weekend.

Next on the list of losers is the sensitive man. You meet Mr. Sensitive at a private gathering; he wouldn’t be caught dead at anything as gauche as a club. He has careless hair and an air of ” what’s the point” about his appearance. He is not necessarily beautiful in a conventional sense but he is immediately intriguing. Mr. Sensitive hasn’t much to say, he is rather bored with the whole contemptuous affair. His gaze makes you feel as though your emotions and thoughts are written on your forehead in neon. Goaded by a sick sense of self-destruction, you can not help but attempt to draw him out repeatedly(and unsuccessfully). Feeling vaguely dissatisfied and perversely attracted to him, you run into him at a few chance encounters orchestrated of course by yourself. Finally, he gives you his number. When you do call, he spends several nights in a row, talking with you until the sun comes up. He reveals his entire psyche to you with an intense vulnerability that makes him utterly irresistible. The sensitive usually man reveals in these heartfelt conversations that he is either, an alcoholic, broken hearted and lonely, or tragically disillusioned by the world at large. He looks at you as though you can fix him and his wrenching sense of angst. He seems to think your thoughts are incomprehensible, unique and he’s finally found hi soul mate. The sexual encounter begins with more promise than the coming of spring. He is an exquisitely attentive lover, not even beginning with his pleasure until you have found yours. He worships every part of your body, while professing his undying love. After this cosmic experience, he holds you all night. This man doesn’t stay the night, he stays the weekend. Sounds to good to be true? You should go with that feeling, because Tuesday he calls to tell you that he can never see you again. Apparently, he doesn’t deserve to be loved and will only bring you endless pain and suffering. You can almost believe it until you look down at your caller ID box and see that he is calling you from your other best friend’s house.

Last and most certainly the least is Mr. Oh (My God What Have I Done). Physically, Mr. Oh can be like Mr. Sensitive or Mr. Mechanical. He has a playful goofiness about him that draws you to him in the first place. Yet Mr. Oh doesn’t understand that “needy” is not a heady cologne. He pursues you with the relentlessness of a government assassin seeking JFK. His mounting volume of late night phone calls brings him no shame. This is someone you would be with only if you were on the rebound from a torrid love affair, a recovering drug addict, or grieving for the loss of a close family member. If this is your scenario, you finally consent to the onslaught of his sheer determination. The basic premise of your rationalization is that, he wants you so bad, its got to be good. This mode of thinking, given time to reflect on the act afterwards, will cause you to long with a fiery intensity for a frontal lobe extraction. Mr. Oh is so afraid you’ll change your mind, there is no foreplay to speak of. Penetration is immediate, as is the climax five seconds later. It is done quicker than you can say, “Was it good for you?.” Then the final humiliation ensues when he rolls away and says, “Next one’s yours, babe.” You make up a frantic sounding excuse, such as, you have to train for the iditerod at five A.M., and literally shove him out the door. You’re so disgusted by the whole experience, you spend the rest of your life avoiding him, even if this entails transferring schools, quitting your job, or hoping to God that you witness a crime, just so you can join the witness protection program. Of course, he’s so distraught by your rejection, he can only find solace the next weekend with your third best friend.

I can only hope, dear reader, that his bitterness and cynicism is not an infectious disease which will latch onto you with all the savageness of a rabid wolf. On the other hand, perhaps you can consider this a timely warning against the mad melee of sexual slackers that make up ninety percent of the male race. The choice is yours, and no, I’m not an angry girl. Whatever gave you that idea?

What is a Classification Essay?

In a classification essay, a writer organizes, or sorts, things into categories.

Three Steps to Effective Classification:

1. Sort things into useful categories.
2. Make sure all the categories follow a single organizing principle.
3. Give examples that fit into each category.

Finding Categories

This is a key step in writing a classification essay. To classify, or sort, things in a logical way, find the categories to put them into. For example, say you need to sort the stack of papers on your desk. Before you would put them in random piles, you would decide what useful categories might be: papers that can be thrown away; papers that need immediate action; papers to read; papers to pass on to other coworkers; or papers to file.

Thesis Statement of a Classification Essay

The thesis statement usually includes the topic and how it is classified. Sometimes the categories are named.

(topic)…(how classified)…(category) (category) (category)

Ex: Tourists in Hawaii can enjoy three water sports: snorkeling, surfing, and sailing.

How to Write an Effective Classification Essay

1. Determine the categories. Be thorough; don’t leave out a critical category. For example, if you say water sports of Hawaii include snorkeling and sailing, but leave out surfing, your essay would be incomplete because surfing is Hawaii’s most famous water sport. On the other hand, don’t include too many categories, which will blur your classification. For example, if your topic is sports shoes, and your organizing principle is activity, you wouldn’t include high heels with running and bowling shoes.
2. Classify by a single principle. Once you have categories, make sure that they fit into the same organizing principle. The organizing principle is how you sort the groups. Do not allow a different principle to pop up unexpectedly. For example, if your unifying principle is “tourist-oriented” water sports, don’t use another unifying principle, such as “native water sports,” which would have different categories: pearl diving, outrigger, or canoe racing.
3. Support equally each category with examples. In general, you should write the same quantity, i.e., give the same number of examples, for each category. The most important category, usually reserved for last, might require more elaboration.
