Dear Mr. Bradshaw: I am a senior in high school and I’m starting to write my personal essay for the common application.
Before I start, I would like to know how important the personal statement is to the admissions process. I have top grades and test scores, so do I really need to worry about it? I’ve gotten mixed reactions from my advisers. — Perplexed student
Dear Perplexed — Almost every college applicant must write an essay about himself or herself.
If a student isn’t used to talking about himself or herself, it can be a little daunting. Your question is common among students. Does someone in the admissions office read the essay or does it just get wadded up and tossed in the circular file?
Rest assured members of the admissions committee read the personal essay and all the other essays you write. They can make all the difference in the world regarding your admission.
Picture yourself sitting in the admissions office with thousands of applications stacked around you — on the conference table, on the floor, on the chairs behind you. Empty soda cans and coffee cups pile up as testament to the hours put in reading them. Committee members grow glassy-eyed from looking at literally hundreds of applications each week. After a while, they all start to look the same — same grades, test scores, awards and extracurricular activities.
Yet, each applicant must somehow separate himself or herself from the pack. There are only so many openings (Harvard accepts about 2,000 students from 30,000 applicants) so when it comes time to vote, how will they decide?
After years as an alumni interviewer, I have no doubt that a well-written, interesting personal essay gets the most attention, and that applicant is the one who is admitted.
Even the short essays are important. And it is a dangerous tactic not to take them seriously.
The short essays are a chance to show a part of you that isn’t reflected in the formal rankings. It is a chance to talk about you — your personal traits, values, the experiences that helped shape your life, and the experiences that give you inspiration for the future.
The personal essay and short essays can tell admissions officials about the person behind the grades and test scores.
I knew the competition would be tough when I applied to college, and I had to stand out. I wanted my personal essay to be the focal point of my application. I spent several hours thinking about it before I started writing.
I let my friends review the first draft. To a person, they said great things about it: that it was well-written, intelligent to read, that it was the real me, etc.
But my best friend thought differently. After reading it, he wadded it up and threw it back at me.
“I don’t like it,” he said. “This isn’t you.”
He said I looked like everybody else applying to college — full of hot air and third-person intellectual baloney. As evidence, he quoted several embarrassing lines, one of which I remember today: “I have always been interested in the philosophical implications of Nietzsche as applied to ancient Greece, etc.”
It scared me that he was the only one willing to point this out. He risked our friendship, but firmly disagreed with the others. I respected his opinion and reluctantly agreed to change my approach and write an autobiographical essay.
It was the smartest decision I ever made. I got into all the colleges to which I applied. My friend and I remain good friends today.
He saved me from making a serious blunder when writing an essay. In essence, he had the guts to tell me my initial essay was boring.
And he was right. My first draft made me look plain vanilla. In no way did it represent me as a person nor did it bring out the personal accomplishments in my life that I valued most — my military service with the 101st Airborne Division or the time I spent at the United States Military Academy as part of the training cadre. I was there for Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s famous valedictory address, “Duty, Honor, Country.”
Those were the things that made me who I am today, not brain power or intellectual aspirations.
I wrote and rewrote the essay at least a dozen times. It took me three weeks and a lot of pizza-party bull sessions before I got it right. But I knew when I finished the last draft that it was the one; I didn’t need anyone else to read it. For the first time in my life, I recognized the sound of my own voice.
So don’t look at the college essay as a waste of time. It is your opportunity to blow the competition out of the water.

Write a personal narrative for a college or job application.
At first, you may think, “My life is so boring. What do I write about?” The truth is that you don’t have to lead an exciting life to write an interesting narrative. A good story depends more on the telling than on the content. In this narrative, explain how an experience helped shape your views.
PREWRITING
An application essay gives you the opportunity to distinguish yourself from everyone else. Take advantage of the opportunity by writing about an experience that helped make you who you are—one that helped shape your goals, your values, or your view of yourself and the people around you. For example, you may write about:
- An experience that shows your personal growth
- An incident in which you defended something you believe in
- An incident in which you made a significant choice or decision
- An experience that helped you better understand and appreciate your heritage
- An experience in which you overcame an obstacle or problem
To help you brainstorm for a good topic:
- Make a list of things, people, or behaviors that give you excitement, fulfillment, or peace
- List four aspects of your life that you value highly
- List four things that you like about yourself
- List four areas in which you think you could improve
Consider your purpose:
- How will this narrative strengthen my application?
- How can I show a part of me not represented in my application
- How can I make my application stand out from the rest?
Make a plan:
| Purpose |
What do you hope to achieve through your narrative? What do you want it to say about you? |
| Main idea |
What experience did you choose to write about? What did you learn as a result of this experience? |
| Organization |
In what order do you plan to tell your story? Will you organize it chronologically, or will you use flashbacks to the past? What will you say at the beginning of your story? In the middle? At the end? |
| Characters |
What other people will appear in your narrative? How will you describe them? |
Student Model
Last spring, when my mother announced that we were going to spend our family vacation visiting cousins in Mexico, I let out a big groan. I had a lot of great ideas for the family vacation, and going to a hot, dusty place to visit people I’d never met surely wasn’t one of them. I tried every argument I could think of to change my mother’s mind about the trip. I said it would be too hot for my baby sister, the trip would cost too much, I’d have trouble getting time off from my part-time job, we’d be imposing on our relatives, and on and on and on. I might as well have saved my breath. My mother’s mind was made up. Today, I’m truly glad it was. Much to my surprise, the trip to Mexico was one of the best and most important experiences of my life.
*** As you can tell, you are allowed to use “you’s” and contractions. If you don’t bother to read this example…oh, well.

Admission essay writing is a necessary part of the admission process in different institutions. You need to give your personal information, critically analysis your skills and educational qualification and justify your application for admission in a certain course. But before writing this type of essay you should always do fair bit of research about the college and courses it is offering.
What is most characteristic of modern age is that it is dominated by science and scientific thinking, so much so that almost every sphere of modern life is being invaded by science; every sphere is becoming science oriented. And in fact, it is never profitable to deal with any thing in life in an unscientific manner, what ever the results achieved. It is for this reason that all intelligent people are inclined to employ the results of scientific research in trying to improve modes of doing various things. Education is no longer exception to the rule, because modern education is not limited to teaching by trial and error, it puts into practice the conclusions reached in various research works in order to solve the problems that arise before it. Consequently, research is being accorded in the field of education.
At the time of doing research about any institutions you need to do research in the following fields-

Essays are used to learn more about your reasons for applying to the course, university or company and your ability to benefit from and contribute to it. Your answers will let you state your case more fully than other sections of the application, and provide the evaluator with better insight about you and how you differ from the other applicants. In marginal cases, the essays are used to decide whether an applicant will be selected. The purpose of the admissions essay is to convey a sense of your unique character to the admissions committee. The essay also demonstrates your writing skills as well as your ability to organize your thoughts coherently.
Sample essay topics
There are hundreds of possible topics that you can be asked to write an essay on. Given below are some of the more common ones.
- What events, activities or achievements have contributed to your own self-development?
- Describe a situation in which you had significant responsibility and what you learned from it.
- Describe your strengths and weaknesses in two areas: setting and achieving goals, and working with other people.
- Your career aspirations and factors leading you to apply to this course at this time. Describe a challenge to which you have successfully responded. What did you learn about yourself as you responded to this challenge? Describe a challenge you anticipate facing in any aspect of college life. On the basis of what you learned from your earlier response, how do you expect to deal with this challenge?
- Describe and evaluate one experience that significantly influenced your academic interests. The experience might be a high school course, a job, a relationship, or an extracurricular activity. Be sure to explain how this experience led to your setting the goals you now have for yourself, and why you think the academic program for which you are applying will help you to reach those goals.
- Describe your educational, personal or career goals.
- Role Model – If you could meet/be/have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be and why?
- Past Experience – Describe an event that has had a great impact on you and why?
- What was your most important activity/course in high school and why?
- Forecast important issues in the next decade, century – nationally, globally.
- Why do you want to study at this university?
- Tell us something about yourself, your most important activities?
- How would your room, computer or car describe you?
List all your activities for the past four years. Include school activities; awards, honors, and offices held; community services; jobs; and travel. Record major travel experiences. Note your strongest impressions and how they affected you. If you loved the Grand Canyon, for example, write down three specific reasons why, aside from the grandeur and beauty that everyone loves. Describe an accomplishment that you had to struggle to achieve. Include what it was, how you tackled it, and how it changed you.
Think of one or two sayings that you’ve heard again and again around your house since childhood. How have they shaped your life? What personality traits do you value most in yourself? Choose a few and jot down examples of how each has helped you. Think of things that other people often say about you. Write about whether or not you agree with their assessments and how they make you feel.
Brainstorm “top ten” lists in a few selected categories: favorite books, plays, movies, sports, eras in history, famous people, etc. Review your list to see which items stand out and describe what they’ve added to your life. Describe “regular people” who have motivated you in different ways throughout your life. It could be someone you only met once, a third-grade teacher, or a family member or friend.
Starting your essay
The most common topic–particularly if only one essay is required–is the first, “tell us about yourself.” Since this kind of essay has no specific focus, applicants sometimes have trouble deciding which part of their lives to write about. Beware of the chronological list of events that produces dull reading. Remember, also, to accent the positive rather than the negative side of an experience. If you write about the effect of a death, divorce, or illness on your life, tell about but don’t dwell on your bad luck and disappointments.
Instead, emphasize what you have learned from the experience, and how coping with adversity has strengthened you as an individual.
- Tie yourself to the college: Why are you interested in attending, and what can the institution do for you? Be specific. Go beyond “XYZ College will best allow me to realize my academic potential.
- Read the directions carefully and follow them to the letter. In other words, if the essay is supposed to be 500 words or less, don’t submit 1000 words.
- Consider the unique features of the institution, e.g., a liberal arts college will be impressed with the variety of academic and personal interests you might have, while an art institute would be most interested in your creative abilities.
- Be positive, upbeat and avoid the negatives, e.g. I am applying to your school because I won’t be required to take physical education or a foreign language.
- Emphasize what you have learned, e.g. provide more than a narration when recounting an experience.
- Write about something you know, something only you could write.
- Make certain you understand the question or the topic. Your essay should answer the question or speak directly to the given topic.
- List all ideas. Be creative. Brainstorm without censoring.
- Sort through ideas and prioritize. You cannot tell them everything, Be selective.
- Choose information and ideas which are not reflected in other parts of your application. This is your chance to supplement your application with information you want them to know.
- Be persuasive in showing the reader you are deserving of admission. Remember your audience.
